Why buy a modular exhibition wall? Because one set of frames can fit several stand sizes. If you exhibit a few times a year and book different spaces, the same modular display rebuilds as a straight backwall, an L-shape or a U-shape, so one purchase covers a 3m x 2m shell scheme in spring and a 6m x 3m corner space in autumn. If you only ever book one size, a simpler portable display usually costs less.
This guide explains how a modular system works, the kit types we sell, which configuration suits each stand size, what it costs at live prices and how to compare quotes.
Why buy a modular exhibition wall: the quick answer
- Buy modular if you book two or more stand sizes, want to add screens and brochure holders, or need lit graphic panels.
- Buy a portable display (from £388.95 ex VAT for a 3m fabric backdrop) if you book the same size each time and carry the stand yourself.
- Commission bespoke stands from a stand builder only for a large, one-off space where the stand has to look unlike anything else. We don’t build one-off timber stands; we supply ready-made kits and design bespoke exhibition stands from modular frames.
- Budget: modular kits at Stand Central run from £1,458.95 ex VAT (Link Up Kit 1, 3m x 1m) to £4,406.95 (6m x 3m LED lightbox stand), graphics included.
What does “modular” mean for an exhibition stand?
A modular exhibition stand is a set of standard-sized frames that connect side by side or at angles, each carrying a printed fabric graphic. Because every modular panel is a standard size, you can add, remove or rearrange them to fit the stand space you have booked. It works like temporary walling for an event: a freestanding partition that goes up on-site and comes down again after the show.

- Unpack the frames, connectors and graphics from their cases.
- Connect the frames: straight connectors for a run, 90° connectors for a corner.
- Attach the graphics and any accessories such as a monitor bracket or brochure holder.
- Tidy cables for lights and screens so nothing trails into the aisle.
- Dismantle and pack the frames and graphics into their cases until the next event.
Types of modular display stand we sell
Link Up frame systems
Link Up kits are aluminium frame systems sized to the stand footprint rather than a single display. The Link Up Kit 1 for a 3m x 1m space costs £1,458.95 ex VAT at 2m high, or £1,707.95 at 2.5m. Kit 2 covers a 4m x 4m space from £2,281.95, and the 6m x 3m kit open on two sides costs £3,325.95 at 2m high. Each kit comes in 2m, 2.3m and 2.5m heights, so you can choose the height that suits the venue.
LED lightbox systems
Lightbox wall panels are freestanding LED frames that join with magnetic, straight and corner connectors. A single Glopix LED Light Box 2000mm x 850mm is £557.95 ex VAT and a 2250mm x 2000mm panel is £988.95. Add 90° connectors (£29.95 a pair) or 180° connectors (£17.95) to change the layout, and a monitor bracket for screens up to 32 inches (£57.95). Browse all backlit display walls.
Tension fabric kits
Tension fabric kits use lightweight aluminium frames with stretch graphics, and many add LED spotlights, shelving or a case that converts to a counter. Product pages state they set up in 5 to 10 minutes without tools. They suit exhibitors who want a modular design that still packs into compact bags.
Choosing a modular configuration by stand size
The modular exhibition stands range shows how one lightbox system scales. Every kit below is open on two sides, 2250mm high, tool-free and supplied with carry cases and UK plug transformers:
| Stand space | Kit | Lightbox panels | Live price (ex VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2m x 2m | Exhibition Stand Kit 1 | 4 panels, 3,700mm of wall | £2,226.95 |
| 3m x 2m | Exhibition Stand Kit 2 | 4 panels, 4,700mm of wall | £2,699.95 |
| 3m x 3m | Exhibition Stand Kit 3 | 4 panels, 5,700mm of wall | £3,149.95 |
| 6m x 3m | Exhibition Stand Kit 6 | 6 panels, 8,700mm of wall | £4,406.95 |
The practical advantage: every kit is built from the same panel widths, 850mm, 1000mm and 2000mm, all 2250mm high. Kit 6 contains everything in Kit 3 plus one 2000mm and one 1000mm panel, so a business that books both a 3m x 3m and a 6m x 3m space can take the full set to the big show and leave two panels at base for the small one. Confirm the combination for your spaces before you order.
Modular stand vs portable vs custom build

| Built by | One person | Your team, tool-free | Contractor |
| Lighting and screens | Clip-on lights only | Built-in LEDs, monitor brackets | Anything |
| Typical outlay | From £388.95 for 3m | From £1,458.95 for a kit | Quoted per project |
| Best for | Same size every show | Mixed sizes, frequent shows | One large flagship space |
For lightweight options, see our guide to the best portable exhibition stands, or compare pop up stands if you only need one fixed size. A pop up stand is one folding frame in one size; a modular display is a set of separate frames that connect in different layouts, so it can grow or shrink to suit different event spaces.
Benefits for a frequent exhibitor
- One stand, many layouts. Connectors let the same panels form a straight run, an L or a U, so you can reconfigure for each floor space and maximise the area you paid for.
- Keep the hardware. Graphics are separate from the frames, so the same display system goes to every show and only the message on it changes.
- Add function. Monitor brackets and brochure holders attach to the system rather than standing loose on the floor.
- Lit graphics. Built-in LEDs keep a stand readable in a dim hall. Check the organiser’s power allowance: in our research, only 7 of 26 shell scheme rate cards that list their inclusions included a socket (Stand Central stand costs research).
- Lower cost per show. A £3,149.95 lightbox stand used at ten shows works out at £315.00 per show. That is why buying is the most cost-effective choice for a frequent exhibitor. Our guide to reusable exhibition stands shows how to plan for that.
- Lower environmental impact. Reusing frames for future events avoids building a new stand for every show. Look for recyclable or sustainable materials on the product page if that matters to your business.
Buy a modular stand or use exhibition stand hire?
Divide the purchase price by the number of shows you expect to attend over the life of the stand, then compare that figure with an exhibition stand hire quote for the same specification. Add storage if you have no room for the cases. In our view, buying makes sense from about three shows a year, because hire charges recur while a bought frame is yours to move and store. We also offer exhibition stand hire in England, so you can get a hire quote from us for the comparison.
How to compare modular stand quotes
Our comparison of 69 display offers from UK suppliers found that complete stands are the hardest products to compare: only one of the eight suppliers we checked priced two walls, a printed counter and transport in a single number. Lit walls also vary widely, with single-sided lightboxes priced from £899 to £2,063 ex VAT (captured 28 September 2026). Line up each quote on the same four points:
- Size: width and height of each panel, frame type and printed sides.
- What is in the box: cases, feet, lights and connectors.
- Extras: delivery to your address and any artwork charge.
- VAT: compare ex VAT with ex VAT.
Then send us your stand size, open sides and the trade show dates you plan to do. FREE artwork design or proofing on every order. For layout ideas, see our guide to designing a trade show booth, or browse all modular exhibition walls.
Frequently asked questions
What does “modular walls” mean?
Modular walls are display walls built from standard-sized frames that connect in different sizes and configurations. You can add or remove panels to fit the space, rather than buying a new stand for every event.
How much does a modular display system cost?
At live Stand Central prices, a single Glopix LED lightbox panel starts at £557.95 ex VAT, a Link Up kit for a 3m x 1m space at £1,458.95, and a complete LED lightbox stand for a 3m x 3m space at £3,149.95. Prices include printed graphics.
Can a modular stand fit a shell scheme space?
Yes, if the panels fit inside the shell scheme walls and under the fascia board. A 2250mm-high lightbox needs that much clear height, and lit panels need a power socket. See our shell scheme stand design guide.
What makes a good exhibition stand?
A clear message readable from the aisle, a layout that leaves an open front for visitors, and display boards placed at eye level. This helps because you can adapt the layout to each space instead of squeezing a fixed design into it.
Do I need banner stands as well?
Often, yes. One or two banner stands at the front corners add height and direct people in, and they cost far less than another modular panel.
