Modular vs custom exhibition stand and when each one makes sense

Modular vs custom exhibition stand and when each one makes sense

If you are weighing up a modular vs custom exhibition stand, the short answer is this. A modular stand is the better buy for most exhibitors, because you pay for the frames once, reprint the graphics when your message changes and use the same stand at show after show. A one-off custom built stand only really makes sense for a large flagship stand at one big show, where you want structures, meeting rooms or raised floors that a modular system cannot give you, and you are happy to pay for the design and build again next time. The bigger impact on your budget comes from how many shows you do.

We supply modular exhibition stands rather than one-off builds, so I have kept the custom side of this comparison to what that route involves rather than our prices for it. Every modular price below is ex VAT from our live product pages. Prices checked on 4 November 2026.

Modular vs custom exhibition stand at a glance

The two routes differ most on what you own after the show. A modular exhibition stand is yours to keep and rebuild, while a custom exhibition stand is usually designed, built and paid for one show at a time.

Best for a modular stand: companies that exhibit a few times a year, book plots of different sizes, or want a stand that still looks right in two or three years with fresh graphics.

Best for a custom built stand: a large space only plot at one major show, where the stand needs complex structures and the budget covers a full design and build every time.

What a modular exhibition stand is

A modular exhibition stand is a set of aluminium frames and printed fabric graphics that join together into walls, corners, counters and storerooms. Because the parts are separate, the layout is flexible: you can arrange them to suit the space you have booked and add to them later.

Each system is a set of components rather than one fixed structure, which is where the flexibility comes from, and the systems we sell work in slightly different ways. Link Up kits go together without tools and come in heights from 2m to 2.5m, with SEG fabric graphics and a 1-year warranty on the hardware. Modulate frames are 30mm aluminium tube with magnets in the uprights, so walls snap together at almost any angle, and each graphic slides over its frame like a pillowcase. Fastframe frames arrive already put together, so you unfold each one and lock it with its central support bar. Vector is the heavier option, a 50mm aluminium profile put together with an Allen key, and it is the system to look at if you want a modular stand that feels like a built one.

If you are only buying walls rather than a whole stand, the same thinking applies to a portable vs modular exhibition wall: a portable wall is quick and simple, and a modular wall can be extended into a bigger layout later. My guide on why to buy a modular exhibition wall covers that in more detail, and there is a separate comparison of a pop up stand vs modular stand if you are choosing for a smaller plot.

What a custom built exhibition stand is

A custom built exhibition stand is a one-off structure designed for a single show and a single space, usually by an exhibition stand builder. The builder designs it, makes it, transports it and puts it up on site, then takes it down again after the show.

That route can produce something striking, and for very large flagship stands with meeting rooms, AV and raised flooring it is often the only way to get the result. The catch is that you pay for the design, build, transport, installation and removal each time, and the stand is usually scrapped or stored at a cost afterwards. To be clear about our part in this, we are a supplier, not a stand builder, so we do not make one-off timber stands.

The difference in cost between modular stands and custom stands

Over several shows a modular stand is the cheaper solution, because the frames are a one-off cost while a custom stand is paid for again each time. The smallest of our Link Up kits is the Link Up Kit 1 for a 3m x 1m space at £1,458.95 ex VAT, and the Link Up Kit 4 for a 6m x 3m space open on 3 sides is £2,718.95 at 2m high.

For complete kits with a counter and lighting, the 9m² Modulate stand with a storeroom and counter is £4,161.95, the 18m² Fastframe stand with a storeroom is £4,770.95, and the 24m² Vector stand with a storeroom, two lightboxes and a counter is £10,168.95. The chart below shows the full spread across the three ranges.

A custom built stand does not have a list price, because each one is quoted by the stand builder for that project. What you can compare is what the quote covers: design, materials, the build on site, transport, installation and removal, all for one show. With a modular stand, the second show costs you new graphics at most, or nothing at all if your message has not changed.

Remember the floor space too, which you pay for either way. In our stand costs research, headline space only rates ran from £125 to £1,100 per m² ex VAT across 26 rate cards, so on a large plot the space can cost as much as the stand.

Where bespoke stands win on design freedom

A custom stand wins on pure design freedom, and a modular stand wins on getting a strong design for a fraction of the cost. If your stand design needs a two storey structure, curved timber walls or a large enclosed meeting room, a stand builder is the route.

For most stands, though, the things visitors notice are the graphics, the lighting and how tidy the stand looks, and modular systems cover all three. On a Fastframe stand one fabric graphic can run across several joined frames, so a long wall reads as one picture rather than a row of panels, which gives you a big brand feature without a built wall. The Vector system adds an archway, a storeroom and built-in LED lightboxes, so a large modular stand looks more architectural and built. Smaller elements such as a printed counter, shelves and arm lights finish it off.

Why modular stands are the sustainable choice

A modular stand is the more sustainable choice because the frames, counters and lighting are kept and only the print is replaced, so every component goes round again. A one-off build that is scrapped after the show is the opposite of that.

Organisers are starting to ask about it too. In our green exhibition rules research, the London Tech Week space only manual said that space only stands must be compliant with Informa’s Better Stands programme, a scheme for moving the industry towards reusable stands, and London Vet Show charged £500 + VAT for removing anything left behind, including carpet tape and literature.

The trade off with a modular stand is storage. The 18m² Fastframe kit has a packed weight of 137kg, so you need somewhere to keep it and a way to move it between shows. A custom stand avoids that only if it is thrown away, or you pay the builder to store it.

Set up time and stand plans

Your own team can put up a modular stand, while a custom stand is built on site by contractors over the build-up days. Link Up, Modulate and Fastframe frames need no tools, and Vector modules are built with an Allen key and then locked together with flip bars or bolts.

On a space only plot, plan for paperwork whichever you choose. In our exhibitor deadlines research, space only exhibitors had to send stand plans, risk assessments and method statements a median 44 days before opening, across 13 events. A custom stand has to be fully designed before then, while a modular kit can be drawn from its frame sizes, and we will confirm the frame and graphic breakdown for a Link Up kit against your stand plan before you order.

Custom elements on modular stands, the middle option

You do not have to pick between a fixed kit and a one-off build, because a modular stand can be laid out and designed around your space and brand. That is what we mean by custom exhibition stands: reusable frames, fabric walls, lightboxes and counters chosen for your plot, with a visual and a written quote before you order.

This is also where the question of an exhibition stand kit vs buying separately comes in. A complete kit is the simplest way to buy, with every frame, graphic, counter and light worked out for one size of space. Buying the parts separately, or asking us for a custom configuration, suits an odd shaped plot or a layout you want to grow into. Every order includes FREE artwork design or proofing, and our design team can lay out the graphics for every frame.

If you only exhibit once, or your plot changes every time and you would rather not own a stand at all, our exhibition stand hire service puts up a modular stand at your venue for a flat rate per square metre.

Which one to choose as an exhibitor

For most exhibitors the modular stand is the right call, and the custom build is for a specific kind of show. These rules should settle it, and the main factor to weigh is how often you exhibit.

  • Choose a modular stand if you exhibit more than once a year, because the frames carry over and each show after the first costs you graphics at most.
  • Choose a modular stand if your plot size changes from show to show, since the same frames can be rearranged or added to.
  • Choose a modular stand if your organiser asks for reusable stands or charges for waste left behind.
  • Choose a custom built stand if you have a large space only plot at one major show and need structures a modular system cannot make, such as a second storey or a large enclosed meeting room.
  • Choose a custom modular stand if you want a stand designed around your brand and space, without paying for a new build every time.

You can see every size and system in our range of modular exhibition stands, from Link Up kits for a 3m x 1m space to 24m² Vector stands with a storeroom.

Frequently asked questions

Can a modular exhibition stand be customised?

Yes. The layout, graphics, counters, lighting and storage can all be chosen for your space, which is what a custom modular exhibition stand is. Each frame carries its own printed graphic, so the whole stand is designed around your brand, and you can change the layout for a different plot later.

Is a modular stand cheaper than a bespoke stand?

Over more than one show, almost always, because you keep the frames and only reprint graphics. A bespoke stand is quoted per project and covers design, build, transport and removal each time. Our Link Up kits start at £1,458.95 ex VAT for a Link Up Kit 1.

Can a modular stand look as good as a custom build?

For most stand sizes, yes. Printed fabric walls, LED lightboxes, an archway and a storeroom give a modular stand a finished, built look. Where it cannot compete is very complex structures, such as a two storey stand, which need a stand builder.

Should I hire a stand instead of buying one?

Hiring suits you if you exhibit once or twice a year, or your plot changes each time and you do not want to store a stand. We hire out complete modular stands with installation and breakdown at a flat rate per square metre, at venues across England.
