Illuminated vs standard exhibition counter and when a backlight pays off on your exhibition stand

Illuminated vs standard exhibition counter and when a backlight pays off on your exhibition stand

If you are weighing up an illuminated vs standard exhibition counter, the short answer is that the light pays off when the counter is your main branding at eye level, the hall is dim or busy, and you have a power socket booked. A standard counter is the better buy when you have no power, carry the stand yourself or want the lowest price. On similar sized counters in our range the lit version costs from about £52 more ex VAT.

By an illuminated counter I mean a display counter with integrated LED lighting in the frame, so the LEDs illuminate your printed fabric from behind (backlit) or from the edges (edge-lit). By a standard counter I mean a non-illuminated one with a printed wrap or fabric cover and no lights of its own. Some people search for this as LED vs standard exhibition counter, and it is the same choice. All the figures below come from our own product pages and published research, and prices are ex VAT, checked on 7 November 2026.

Illuminated vs standard exhibition counter at a glance

An illuminated counter gives you more visual impact and a brighter brand, and a standard counter gives you a lighter, cheaper desk that works without power. Here is how the two types compare across the counters named in this guide.

Best for an illuminated counter: a stand where the counter is the first thing visitors see, in a darker hall or at an evening event, with power already booked.

Best for a standard counter: a first show, a stand with no socket, a daylight hall, or anyone who carries the whole stand on their own.

How an illuminated counter adds visual impact under hall lighting

An illuminated counter turns the front of your desk into a lightbox, so your logo and colours stay bright whatever the hall lighting is doing. That is the whole case for paying more: the counter stops being a table with a print on it and becomes the most visible piece of branding on your exhibition stand.

Venue lighting varies from show to show and from one plot to the next, and a printed graphic depends on the light that falls on it. A backlight shines through the fabric from inside, so the colours look rich and even from across the aisle, which helps your brand visibility in busy exhibition halls. A counter is usually positioned at the front of the stand at about 1m high, right where visitors walk past, so it is a natural place for that glow and a good spot for your main marketing messages.

Our Illumigo illuminated counter (£384.95) is 1040mm wide and 1045mm high, with LED edge lighting already fitted round a backlit fabric front and a shelf inside for up to 20kg. The Insta LED exhibition counter (£388.95) is the narrowest at 782mm wide. It uses two pre-fitted LED strips giving around 950 lumens of cool white light, and a black-backed fabric that stops the light bleeding through, so the front glows evenly. The SEG fabric LED lightbox counter (£478.95) lights both faces, front and back, which helps on an open or corner stand. You can see all our LED display counters in our LED backlit counters.

If you want the whole counter to glow rather than just the front, our WaveLight Air inflatable backlit counter has an LED light core inside and lights the graphic all the way round. The medium circular one is 600mm x 600mm x 970mm, weighs 12.5kg and costs £314.95, and it inflates in under 15 seconds. The air pump is sold separately at £33.95, and like every lit counter it needs power.

What a standard counter does better for many exhibitors

A standard counter is lighter, cheaper and works anywhere, because there is nothing to plug in. For a lot of exhibitors that matters more than a glowing front, especially if the stand already has good lighting or the exhibition hall is bright.

The Hop-up fabric pop up counter (£332.95) is 1060mm wide but weighs only 7.4kg, and the graphic stays on the frame when you fold it, so the next set-up is quicker. The Pop Up Counter 1x2 (£293.95) goes up in about five minutes and has a shelf inside for brochures and samples. If you want more storage, the Pop-up Counta (£395.95) is 1260mm wide with a middle and a bottom shelf, and the whole thing packs into a wheeled trolley case.

A standard counter also has no power lead to route, no transformer to find a home for and no risk of a dead socket on the morning the show opens. For a single person building the whole stand, that is one less thing to think about. If budget is the main thing, our flat pack fabric counters start at £159.95, and my guide to pop up counter vs fabric counter compares the portable counters in detail.

A spotlight or a lit counter for the right lighting

Spotlights light your stand walls from above, while an illuminated counter lights itself, so they do different jobs and you can use both. If your back wall already has spotlights, a lit counter adds a second bright point at the front of the stand rather than more light on the same wall.

Our full pop up stand kits already come with LED lights, and an LED spotlight twin pack (£107.95) adds more light to a bigger pop up stand. Spotlights only light the front of a printed counter if one is pointed at it, which needs a wall or arm close by. A backlit counter does not need any of that, so on an island or open stand with no back wall it is often the simpler way to get your exhibition lighting right at the front.

Power, setup and the cost of electrics for an illuminated display

The biggest practical difference is power: an illuminated display needs a mains socket on your stand, and that is often an extra order with its own deadline. Check this before you buy, because a lit counter without power is just a heavier standard counter.

In our exhibition stand costs research, only 7 of the 26 shell scheme rate cards that list their inclusions included power, and 4 said outright that electrics cost extra. At National Civils, Floodex and National Drainage a basic electrical package with one socket and spotlights is £349 extra. On space only the power supply is always an order of its own. Our exhibitor deadlines research found electrics orders closed a median of 31 days before opening, and anywhere from 11 to 56 days depending on the show. Late orders cost more too: JTrade adds 25% to electrical orders placed after its deadline and 50% to anything ordered onsite.

Once power is booked, setup time is short on every lit counter here, because the LEDs come already fitted and there is nothing to wire. The Insta LED frame lifts itself into shape and comes with a 2.7m power cable. The lightbox counter with two lit faces goes up in under five minutes with a UK power cable that has its transformer built in. The Illumigo goes together without tools in under ten minutes and its cable leaves through the base, so two or more can stand tight together to make a longer lit front. The IllumiLOCK runs at low voltage from an external transformer that draws up to 60W and comes with an EU plug and a UK adapter.

Weight, storage and how portable illuminated counters are

A standard counter is easier to carry, and an illuminated counter usually weighs more for the same size. The lit counters here run from 12.5kg to 36kg, against 7.4kg to 19kg for the standard ones.

Similar counters show the gap clearly. The Hop-up fabric pop up is 7.4kg and the Illumigo is 14.2kg at almost the same width. The Pop Up Counter 1x2 is 10kg and the Insta LED is 13kg. The two SEG fabric counters are 10kg unlit and 12.5kg lit, both packed. The Insta LED folds into a padded bag with a shoulder strap and the Illumigo goes in a compartmented carry case with a handle, so neither is hard to move, but they are not as light as a fabric pop up in its carry bag.

The heaviest is the IllumiLOCK illuminated LED counter (£733.95) at 36kg, because it has white MDF panels on all sides and two rear doors that lock with keys. It takes up to 45kg on top and 35kg on its inside shelf, and it packs into two wheeled bags. That makes it the one to choose if you need to lock laptops, stock or valuables away overnight. If portability is the main thing, a standard pop up counter in a wheeled bag is the easier option.

Price and what the backlight costs

On similar sized counters, the backlight adds £52 to £95 ex VAT, and the IllumiLOCK is the exception because you are also paying for storage and a solid build. Here is how the pairs work out.

  • Fabric pop up, about 1m wide: the Hop-up is £332.95 and the Illumigo is £384.95, so the light adds £52.
  • Fabric frame with a silicone edge graphic, about 1m wide: the unlit SEG pop up is £421.95 and the lightbox counter, lit on both faces, is £478.95, so the light adds £57.
  • Compact desk: the Pop Up Counter 1x2 is £293.95 and the Insta LED is £388.95, so the light adds £95.
  • Storage inside: the Pop-up Counta is £395.95 and the IllumiLOCK is £733.95, a gap of £338 that buys a locking cabinet as well as the light.

Add the cost of a socket if your stand does not already include one. At the shows where a basic electrical package costs £349, that is almost as much as the counter itself, so if the counter is the only thing that needs power, check the show manual first. If you are already ordering power for screens or stand lighting, the extra cost of a lit counter is just the difference in the counter price. Both types are reusable from show to show, and the graphic can be reprinted when your branding changes.

Backlit and edge-lit graphics for your brand

A backlit counter uses a fabric graphic printed for light to shine through, so the artwork needs to suit a lit panel. Strong colours and a bold logo work best, and the light makes them stand out more than the same print on a standard counter.

The lit counters here use silicone edge graphics. The silicone strip pushes into a channel round the frame, so the face stays smooth and tight with no visible fixings. On the Insta LED the black backing on the fabric stops light spilling out, and on the IllumiLOCK a blackout panel behind the graphic does the same job. The two-faced lightbox counter comes with two graphics, one for each side, and you can use the same design or two different ones at no extra cost.

Every order includes FREE artwork design or proofing. Send us your artwork and we will check it before it goes to print, or our design team will create it for you. We can also make custom sizes and configurations to fit your space, and there is FREE UK delivery on orders of £200 or more.

Which counter should you buy for your next trade show or event

Pick on power, how you travel and how much the counter carries your branding. These are the rules I would use.

  • Choose an illuminated counter if the counter is your main branding at the front of the stand, the hall is dim or the event runs into the evening, and you have power booked. It suits product launches, hospitality and promotional events where the counter is the focal point.
  • Choose the Insta LED if you want the cheapest compact lit desk, or the Illumigo for a wider lit front with a shelf inside.
  • Choose the lightbox counter with two lit faces for an open or corner stand where people see both sides.
  • Choose the IllumiLOCK if you need locking storage as well as the light.
  • Choose a standard counter if you have no power on the stand, carry everything yourself, or the hall is bright and your stand lighting already does the job.
  • Choose the Hop-up fabric pop up if you want the lightest standard counter at about 1m wide.

You can compare every model in our exhibition counters range, including the pop up counters that come in various shapes and sizes. How we compared

This is a desk comparison of published product data, not a hands-on test. On 7 November 2026 we read the live product pages for every illuminated and standard counter named here and took the sizes, weights, top loads, lighting and inclusions as listed on each page. Prices are ex VAT on that date. The power and deadline figures come from our own exhibition stand costs and exhibitor deadlines research, and the diagrams are drawn from the same published dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Do illuminated exhibition counters need power?

Yes. Every illuminated counter here has built-in LEDs that run from mains power, so you need power on your stand. Only 7 of 26 shell scheme rate cards in our research included power, so check the show manual and order electrics before the deadline, often about a month before opening.

How much more does an illuminated counter cost?

On similar sized counters in our range the backlight adds £52 to £95 ex VAT. The Illumigo is £384.95 against £332.95 for the Hop-up fabric pop up. The IllumiLOCK costs more at £733.95 because it also has a storage cabinet that locks.

Can I add lighting to a standard counter?

Sometimes. The SEG fabric pop up counter can be turned into a lightbox counter with an extra lighting kit, so ask us about it when you order. Most other standard counters are not built for lights, so if you want a lit counter it is simpler to buy one with the LEDs already fitted.

Are illuminated counters harder to set up?

Not really. The LEDs come already fitted, so you build the frame, fit the graphic and plug in. The two-faced lightbox counter goes up in under five minutes and the Illumigo in under ten. The extra step is making sure the power lead reaches a socket.

Is an illuminated counter worth it for a small stand?

It can be, because on a small stand the counter is often the main piece of branding. The Insta LED is only 782mm wide. If your stand has no power or you carry everything yourself, a standard counter is the more practical choice.
