Pull up banner vs X banner and which one suits your event

Pull up banner vs X banner and which one suits your event

When you compare a pull up banner vs X banner, the pull up banner is the better choice for most trade shows and events. It stands taller, takes up less floor, protects the graphic inside its base and costs less at the same width in its basic form. An X banner is worth buying when weight and packed size matter more than anything else, because the whole stand weighs well under half a kilo and folds into a small bag.

Every price and size here is for stands we sell, so the two types are compared like for like. Prices are ex VAT and were checked on 5 November 2026.

Pull up banner vs X banner at a glance

The short answer is that a pull-up banner gives you more height and a neater finish for less money, and an X banner gives you the lightest stand to carry. The table compares an 800mm wide example of each from our own range.

Both are single sided and listed for indoor use. The difference is in how each one holds the printed design, which changes the height, the footprint, the weight and how well the graphic lasts between events.

What is an X banner?

An X banner is a lightweight banner stand where a flexible X frame holds a printed banner taut from its four corners. On our Beijing Lite X banner stand, a fibreglass frame with crossed arms sits behind the banner, and the banner has an eyelet in each corner that hooks onto the tips of the arms. The tension in the frame pulls the print flat.

There is no base to fill or weigh down and nothing to screw together, so it is tool-free. The lower arms reach the floor and splay backwards, which is what keeps it standing. The 600mm version weighs 0.29kg and the 800mm version 0.34kg, and both pack into a drawstring carry bag.

How a retractable banner differs from an X-frame

A retractable banner stores its print inside its own base, while an X-frame holds the print from the corners and leaves nothing to protect it once it comes down. On a pull-up banner the design is printed on a roll that sits inside an aluminium base, also called a cassette. You pull the banner up, clip the top rail onto a pole that slots into the base, and when you pack up it rolls back down into the base.

That mechanism is why the same product goes by several names: a roller banner, a roll-up banner, a retractable banner or a pull-up banner. They all describe one type of stand, and the X banner is a different format altogether.

Height, size and fit of each banner stand

A pull-up banner is the taller stand. Our standard pull up banners show a 2000mm tall graphic, and the Mosquito 800mm stands 2105mm tall, while our X banners are 1600mm and 1800mm tall. At a show that extra 200mm to 400mm puts your logo above the heads of people in the aisle, where it can be read from further away.

The X banner also shows a little less print than its frame size suggests. The 800mm X banner has a visible area of 750mm wide x 1700mm high, and the 600mm version shows 550mm x 1500mm, because the four corners are taken up by the eyelets and frame tips.

Footprint is where the two differ most. The X banner needs room behind the print for its legs, so the 800mm version stands 650mm front to back and the 600mm version 500mm. A pull-up banner keeps everything under the print: the Expovision 800mm needs 260mm and the Mosquito 800mm 285mm. On a small 3x3 stand, a pull-up banner can sit almost flat against a wall, while an X banner takes up a strip of floor that could have held a counter or a table, so it is harder to fit into a tight space.

For a lower ceiling or a shorter display, there are pull up banners made to that size too. The Wasp 600mm with a 1.6m tall graphic is from £86.95 ex VAT and is 320mm deep. My guide to pull up banner sizes sets out every width and height we sell.

Setup time and portability of each display

Both are fast to put up, so setup time is not really the deciding factor. Our X banner listing says it goes up in a minute, and the Mosquito pull-up banner goes up in under a minute, because its three-part pole is held together by an internal bungee cord and clicks into one piece.

Weight is the real difference. The X banner weighs 0.29kg to 0.34kg, so one person can carry several at once or keep a spare in the car. A pull-up banner is heavier because of its aluminium base: the Expovision 600mm weighs 1.4kg, the Expovision 800mm 2.8kg and the Mosquito 800mm 2.9kg. If you are flying to a show, taking stands on a train or sending a quantity of them across several retail branches, the X banner is the more portable one and much easier to move around.

Setting up an X banner means hooking the four corners onto the frame each time, and taking them off again when you pack up. On a pull-up banner the print never leaves the stand, so packing up is just letting it roll back into the base and folding the pole.

Stability, durability and a professional finish

A pull-up banner keeps its graphic in better condition, because it is stored rolled up inside the base rather than loose in a bag. The Expovision prints are anti-curl and anti-glare, and the 800mm uses grey backed blockout media, which stops light showing through under bright hall lighting and gives a more professional look up close.

The X banner is printed single sided on 440gsm economy banner vinyl with water-based latex inks, and our listing describes it as best kept indoors and suited to short-term campaigns. That makes it a sensible format for a promotion that runs for a few weeks, a seasonal offer or an event where you need lots of stands for a short time. If you plan to reuse the same stand at every show for the next few seasons, the pull-up banner is the safer unit to buy.

On stability, the Expovision has twist out feet under a solid base, and the Mosquito has two feet that twist out to stop it tipping. The X banner relies on its splayed legs, which is fine on a level hall floor but leaves it more exposed to being knocked in a crowded aisle. Neither of these models is listed for outdoor use, so if your event is outside, my guide to an indoor vs outdoor roller banner covers the stands made for it.

Pull-up banner and X banner stand price comparison

On price, the cheapest pull-up banner costs less than the X banner at both widths we sell. The Expovision 600mm is from £55.95 ex VAT against £85.95 for the 600mm X banner, and the Expovision 800mm is from £61.95 against £92.95 for the 800mm X banner. Every price includes your printed design.

So if budget is the main reason you were looking at an X banner, a basic pull-up banner is usually the better buy. Where the X banner earns its price is the low weight and small packed size, and that is the trade-off to weigh up. If you want a pull-up banner built to be used again and again, the step up is a mid-range stand such as the Mosquito 800mm pull up banner at £109.95 ex VAT, with a snap top rail and padded double-skin bag. My guide to a budget vs premium roller banner explains what the extra money buys.

Roller banner vs L banner and other formats

An L banner is another budget banner stand, where the print hangs from a pole that rises from a flat L shaped base at the back. We do not sell L banners, so I can only compare it in general terms: like the X banner it is a light, low cost stand, and like it the print is fixed on rather than stored in a base, so a roller banner gives a more finished look for regular use.

For most people choosing between a pull up banner or an X banner, the decision comes down to height, floor space, weight and how often the stand will be used.

Which banner stand to buy for your event

Buy a pull-up banner if it will be used at trade shows, conferences, receptions or in a retail setting, and buy an X banner if it has to be as light and compact as possible. These decision rules cover most cases.

  • Best for: regular trade shows and events. Choose a pull-up banner such as the Expovision 800mm pull up banner, which is taller, sits close to the wall and protects its print.
  • Best for: travelling light, flying to shows or many stands at once. Choose an X banner such as the Beijing Lite 800mm X banner, which weighs 0.34kg.
  • Best for: short promotions on the smallest budget. Choose the Expovision 600mm or 800mm, which cost less than the X banners at the same width.
  • Best for: narrow spaces next to a counter. Choose the Beijing Lite 600mm X banner if weight matters, or the Wasp 600mm 1.6m pull-up banner if floor depth matters more.

You can compare all of our pull up banners in one place, from budget stands to premium ones.

How we compared

This is a desk comparison of published information, not a test of the stands. I compared the specs on our live listings for the Beijing Lite X banner stand in 600mm and 800mm, and the Expovision, Wasp and Mosquito pull up banners, covering price, height, visible print area, floor depth, weight, print material, carry bag and indoor or outdoor use, all checked on 5 November 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pull up banner called?

A pull up banner is also called a roller banner, a roll-up banner or a retractable banner. All four names describe the same stand, where the printed banner rolls into an aluminium base and is pulled up and clipped to a pole for display. Banner stand is the general term that covers X banners too.

Is an X banner cheaper than a pull up banner?

Not always. On our site the basic Expovision pull-up banner is cheaper at both widths, from £55.95 ex VAT at 600mm and £61.95 at 800mm, against £85.95 and £92.95 for our X banners. The X banner is the lighter stand, at 0.29kg to 0.34kg.

What size is an X banner compared with a pull up banner?

Our X banners are 600mm x 1600mm and 800mm x 1800mm. Standard pull up banners are 2000mm tall in widths from 600mm upwards. The X banner also stands further out from the wall, at 500mm or 650mm deep against about 260mm for an Expovision pull-up banner.

Can you use an X banner outside?

Our X banners are listed for indoor use only. The frame has no base or ground pegs, and the vinyl is suited to short indoor campaigns. For outdoor events, use an outdoor roller banner with a deeper base and pegs, which is rated for wind when pegged down.
