The best backdrop for a press wall is a straight, free-standing fabric wall with one printed graphic and no joins across the middle. It should be at least 2.3m tall so heads and shoulders sit inside it, wide enough for the number of people in each photo, and quick for one person to put up. For most press walls and event media walls we would pick a Formulate straight fabric wall, with a Hop-up fabric pop up stand when the backdrop has to travel to a lot of events.
Below I compare the backdrop options we sell for press walls, step and repeat walls and event photo backdrops, with sizes and weights taken from each product page. Prices are live Stand Central prices, ex VAT, checked on 28 October 2026.
What is the best backdrop for a press wall
A press wall (also called a media wall or media backdrop) is the branded background people stand in front of for photos, interviews and press conferences. The photo is the whole purpose, so the backdrop has to do three practical things well:
- Look flat on camera. Creases, panel joins and shiny material all show up in pictures, especially with a flash. A stretch fabric print pulled tight gives a smooth, matt surface.
- Fill the shot. It should be taller than the people in front of it and wide enough that the logo still shows behind a group of three or four.
- Be easy to set up. If it goes up on the morning of the event, a structure that needs few or no tools and a print that fits in minutes saves a lot of stress.

That rules some options out early. Vinyl banners hung from a pole can reflect light and crease in transit (we cover the differences in our guide to fabric banner vs vinyl banner), and pop up stands with separate printed panels leave a vertical line every panel width, which can cut through a face or logo in the middle of a shot. Fabric backdrops avoid both problems, which is why every pick below is fabric.
Press wall backdrop sizes, materials and prices compared
| Backdrop | Size (W x H), weight | From (ex VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Formulate 2m wall | 2000 x 2380mm, 7.3kg | £468.95 |
| Formulate 2.95m wall | 2950 x 2380mm, 7.8kg | £559.95 |
| Formulate 3.95m wall | 3950 x 2380mm, 8.5kg | £709.95 |
| Hop-up 3x3 straight | 2260 x 2260mm, 8kg | £554.95 |
| Hop-up 3x4 straight | 2995 x 2260mm, 9.5kg | £681.95 |
| Impact 3x3 straight | 2700 x 2225mm, 8.1kg | £539.95 |
| Fastframe 3m x 2.4m kit | 3 panels, 2407mm tall | £875.95 |
The quick rule: if the backdrop stays in one venue, choose a Formulate wall. If it travels to multiple events in a car, a Hop-up stand folds down with the print still on. If you want the tallest option in the list and may add to it later, the Fastframe kit is the one. All of them are lightweight enough for one person to carry, from 7.3kg for the 2m Formulate to 9.5kg for the 3x4 Hop-up (the Fastframe kit comes as three separate bags).

Best media wall backdrop for a conference or product launch
The 2.95m Formulate straight fabric display wall is the media wall backdrop I would put forward first for conferences, product launches and awards. It stands 2380mm tall and 2950mm wide, so two or three people fit in front of it with the brand still visible above and around them, which makes it a good event media wall for most rooms. The print is 260gsm stretch polyester, dye-sublimation printed for rich, vibrant colour, and it slides over the tube like a pillowcase and zips closed at the base. That gives one continuous image with no joins and no creases across the media wall.
The structure is 30mm aluminium tube in numbered sections joined by internal bungee cord, with push-button locks and stabilising feet, and the whole kit packs into a padded bag at 7.8kg. For a smaller space or a one-person interview set, the 2m Formulate wall is 2000mm wide at 7.3kg. For larger groups, red carpet arrivals or a stage, the 3.95m Formulate wall gives nearly 4m of backdrop at 8.5kg.
One thing to decide is single or double sided. A single-sided print has a plain white reverse, which is fine against a venue wall. If the press wall stands in an open space where guests see the back, the double-sided 2.95m Formulate wall carries your design on both faces. The product page also notes that a blockout liner can be added if it will sit under bright lights, so nothing shows through from behind.
The best backdrop for a step and repeat
A step and repeat is a backdrop printed with logos in a grid, so at least one full logo shows behind every person whatever the crop. Because the design repeats edge to edge, any join or fold in it is easy to spot, so the best backdrop for a step and repeat is again a single fabric graphic on a straight frame.
For a step and repeat backdrop, the Formulate walls are my first pick for the same reasons as above: one print, a flat face and a full 2380mm height. If you want something taller with a crisp edge, the 3m x 2.4m Fastframe fabric backwall kit uses three 1m x 2.4m frames side by side, each with its own SEG (silicone edge) fabric print, standing 2407mm tall. There is a fine frame line between the three panels, so the repeat should be laid out with that line in a gap between logos, which our design team will do when they set up the artwork. More on how SEG compares with pillowcase fabric is in our guide to SEG vs tension fabric.
Logo and background design for a step and repeat
A few points make logo walls work better in photos, since the repeated pattern is the visual element behind every shot:
- Use two logos at most (for example your brand and a sponsor or event logo) and stagger them in alternate rows, so the wall reads as designed rather than busy.
- Size each logo so several tiles fit across one person’s shoulders. Very large logos get hidden behind heads; very small ones are lost in an event photo.
- Keep a plain, high-contrast background colour behind the logos so faces stand out against it.
- Run the repeat to every edge, so a tight crop on the left or right still shows a full logo.

The same thinking applies to social media. Guests may share their own pictures from a launch or awards night, and those shots are usually cropped tightly on a phone screen. A repeat with your logo at head and shoulder height gives your branding the best chance of staying in each picture, and that visibility is most of the point of having a professional backdrop at all.
The best backdrop stand for events
Search for a backdrop stand for events and much of what comes up is photography kit: two telescopic uprights and a crossbar with a cloth or vinyl sheet hung from it. We do not sell those. They are light and cheap, but the material hangs from the top, so it can ripple or sag unless it is weighted, and the print is usually a separate sheet you have to fold or roll for transport.
For a branded event backdrop that goes to a lot of venues, the best backdrop stand is a fabric pop up stand. The Hop-up 3x3 straight fabric pop up stand is 2260mm wide and 2260mm tall at 8kg, and its 260gsm stretch fabric fixes around the edges with hook and loop. The frame folds down with the print still attached, so setup and pack-down take a few minutes, and it comes in a wheeled carry bag. It also comes in more widths than any other option here: the 3x2 (1525mm wide), 3x4 (2995mm) and 3x5 (3730mm), all 2260mm tall.

The Impact 3x3 straight pop up stand is the other option at 2700mm wide, with magnetic locking arms and printed PVC-free polyester panels. It is a good trade show backwall, but the panels leave a join every panel width, so for a press wall or step and repeat I would choose a Hop-up instead. Both sit with our other pop up display walls if you want to compare every size.
How to choose the best backdrop for an event space
If you are still deciding, these rules cover most event backdrops, from product launches and awards to corporate events and trade show stands:
- One venue, best photo finish: a Formulate straight fabric wall. Choose 2m for one or two people, 2.95m for small groups and 3.95m for stages and larger groups.
- Lots of events, one person carrying it: a Hop-up fabric pop up stand in the width that fits your space, in its wheeled bag.
- Tallest backdrop, or you may grow it later: the 3m x 2.4m Fastframe kit, or the 3m x 2m Fastframe kit (2007mm tall, from £814.95 ex VAT). The panels can later join a larger Fastframe stand.
- A wrap-around feel for a stand: the Fastframe fabric pop up kit, three angled 1m x 2m panels making a 2690mm wide backwall.
- Seen from both sides: a double-sided Formulate wall.
Before you order, check the space you have been given, including any height limit in the venue or event manual, and where the cameras will be. If photos will mostly be taken close up, the height of the logos matters more than the overall width.

Custom graphic printing, material and brand artwork
However good the hardware is, the result is only as good as the print file. Our artwork guidelines ask for artwork at 72 to 125 DPI at full size, in CMYK, supplied as a High Quality Print PDF. For a step and repeat, a vector logo format also keeps every tile sharp at full width. Every order includes FREE artwork design or proofing, so you can send your logo and brand colours and our design team will lay out the custom media wall design for you, or check your own file before it goes to print.

Frequently asked questions
What size should a press wall be?
Height matters most. A backdrop around 2.3m to 2.4m tall keeps heads and shoulders inside the shot, which is why we list the 2380mm Formulate walls and the 2407mm Fastframe kit first. For width, allow roughly 2m for one or two people and 3m or more for groups.
What is the difference between a media wall and a step and repeat?
They are the same kind of backdrop. A media wall is any branded backdrop used for photos and interviews. A step and repeat is a media wall whose design repeats logos in a grid, so a full logo shows behind each person however the picture is cropped.
Is fabric or vinyl better for a press backdrop?
For photos we would choose fabric. Dye-sublimation printed stretch fabric has a matt finish, so it is less likely to reflect a camera flash, and it pulls tight without creases. A fabric print can also be folded for transport.
Can one person put up a media backdrop?
All of these backdrops are free-standing and built without a team. The Hop-up folds with its fabric still on, each Fastframe frame arrives pre-assembled and locks with a support rod, and the Formulate uses numbered push-button sections, with an Allen key supplied for the feet.
Can I change the design later?
Yes. Each frame takes a new print, so you can order fresh artwork for a new event, sponsor or brand update and keep the same hardware.
