Do Green Exhibition Pledges Change What Exhibitors Must Actually Buy?

SOURCE CAPTURES: 2026-09-29

F1. Binding green rules are rare in published exhibitor material
Only 3 of 68 UK trade shows (4.4%) bind exhibitors to a green materials rule in the published exhibitor material we could read: Global Offshore Wind, Infosecurity Europe and London Tech Week. 17 of the 68 (25.0%) mention a green materials rule at all, mostly as encouragement.
Excel London holds ISO 20121, a 2045 net zero target and the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge. Of the 19 shows we read there, 1 (Infosecurity Europe) binds exhibitors to a green materials rule, and that rule bans PVC banners only when they are rigged (hung) above the stand.

F2. Clean-up rules are binding; green materials rules mostly ask
All 10 clean-up rules we coded are binding, against 6 of 28 green materials rules (21.4%). 5 of 68 shows warn exhibitors they will be charged for waste left behind, and 4 publish an amount.
The published amount is £500 + VAT at Learning Technologies, London Vet Show and The Jewellery Show. FIT Show sets a waste charge that starts at £300 + VAT, plus a £500 + VAT fine. None of the 28 green materials rules carries a published charge.

F3. Most suppliers make eco claims; few name a standard
38 of 56 mainstream UK display suppliers (67.9%) make an eco claim for display items, but only 3 (5.4%) name a product-level standard and only 3 (5.4%) publish a take-back or recycling route for used displays.
The named standards are the Global Recycled Standard (Ink on Fabric) and FSC board or paper (Xpo Displays and Printdesigns). The take-back routes are at GH Display, Marler Haley and Nimlok, each with its own scope. 12 suppliers' claims are vague only. 34 of the 56 (60.7%) sell PVC banner or graphic media and 17 (30.4%) offer a PVC-free option.

F4. Same-size eco banners cost 11.7% to 74.1% more
In the 3 comparisons where one supplier listed an eco and a standard banner at the same size, the eco banner cost 11.7% to 74.1% more: BannerBuzz UK (910mm x 610mm): £8.99 standard vs £15.65 eco, +74.1%; Bannerworld (per square metre (lowest band)): £11.34 standard vs £18.70 eco, +64.9%; Tradeprint (1.5m x 0.5m, quantity 1, first delivery column): £18.06 standard vs £20.17 eco, +11.7%.
Tradeprint's default finishing differs between the two banners, so the 11.7% gap is a same-size price comparison, not a like-for-like material premium. We did not measure why prices differ. In 5 other comparisons, eco starting prices were 20.0% to 255.4% above standard starting prices, but the sizes were not matched, so these are not premium estimates.
