Do Green Exhibition Pledges Change What Exhibitors Must Actually Buy?

Methodology and scope | Stand Central documentary research

Question and status

Do the green commitments made around UK trade shows turn into rules that change what an exhibitor has to buy or do, and what does the mainstream display market offer an exhibitor who wants to comply? This is capture-time documentary research of published exhibitor material and supplier pages. It is not an audit of any show, venue or product, and it does not measure environmental outcomes or exhibitor behaviour.

Pages were captured on 2026-09-29 (UTC). The timestamped protocol was written at 2026-09-29T11:19:34Z, before collection, and every later change to the method was logged with its date and time before the collection or analysis it governs. It is a timestamped protocol, not a preregistration.

Who is in the sample

Trade shows: 68 UK B2B trade shows with readable published exhibitor material (manual, rules or exhibitor sustainability pages) for the current or next edition. Shows came from the flagship UK shows of 13 major organisers and the trade-show frames of earlier Stand Central studies. Consumer, agricultural and conference-only events are out of scope.

Suppliers: 56 mainstream UK sellers of portable display items with readable pages. They were chosen for earlier Stand Central price studies before any eco claim was read, so they are the denominator for every supplier share. Stand Central is excluded from every frame by a protocol rule written before collection.

Venue context: Excel London, whose own published pledges are set beside the shows we read there. An entity that yielded no usable pages is excluded from the study rather than reported.

Publication subset

The canonical study also recorded pledges by other venues and organisers and a descriptive set of suppliers found through eco-specific searches. This package publishes the subset that serves a B2B exhibitor reader: every coded exhibitor rule (38), every mainstream-supplier record, every price row (16 rows from 8 comparisons, 3 of whose suppliers were found through eco searches), and Excel London's pledge rows. The subset was logged in the publication folder before the package was built; the canonical data are unchanged. Public numbers are generated from the canonical analysis by script.

Coding

Every coded rule, claim and price carries its source URL, publisher, UTC capture time and a verbatim excerpt; a build fails if any excerpt is not found in its capture. Rules are coded as green materials rules (reuse, sustainability forms, single-use plastics, PVC, carpet) or clean-up rules (waste charges, removing all materials). Binding means mandatory wording ("must", "not permitted", "will be charged") or a sanction; advisory wording ("encourage", "consider", "where possible") is coded encouraged. Fire, structural and electrical rules belong to a separate study and are not coded here.

Supplier grades: names a product-level standard (for example Global Recycled Standard or FSC attached to a display item) > specific material or scheme claim > generic eco wording only > no eco claim found on the pages read. Company-level certificates do not make a display claim certified. Automated candidates were hand-checked, and every override reason is published in the supplier table. "Not found on pages read" describes the pages we read, which are listed in full; it is not proof that no such offer exists.

PVC is measured as whether a supplier sells PVC banner or graphic media on the pages read, excluding PVC-free wording and technical PVC such as Foamex, cable or tablecloths. It is not a measure of the default media.

Measures behind the four findings

Shows: shows whose readable material contains a binding green materials rule, divided by 68. The 3 are Global Offshore Wind, Infosecurity Europe and London Tech Week.

Rules: binding rules divided by all coded rules in each group: clean-up 10 of 10, green materials 6 of 28. Charges are quoted exactly as published, excluding VAT; FIT Show's £300 + VAT is a minimum waste charge, with a separate £500 + VAT fine.

Suppliers: counts of the 56 mainstream suppliers by eco claim grade, PVC media, PVC-free option and published take-back route. A take-back route is a supplier statement that it will accept or collect used display graphics or hardware; general recyclability does not count.

Prices: difference = (eco price - standard price) / standard price, for the same supplier and the same stated size or unit on the same page basis. 3 same-size comparisons qualify. Tradeprint's default finishing differs, so no comparison is presented as a pure material premium. 5 further comparisons use starting prices at unconfirmed sizes; they are published as unmatched starting prices and never as a premium estimate.

Limitations

A purposive census of named frames, not a random sample: statements stay inside the frame and are not estimates for all UK events or suppliers.

Some exhibitor manuals sit behind exhibitor logins, which we did not use. Findings describe published material we could read; a gated manual may hold further rules.

Capture-time evidence: rules, claims and prices can change. Prices are as listed, with the VAT basis recorded as stated on the page.

The study does not measure environmental impact, enforcement, compliance, exhibitor behaviour or product quality, and it makes no causal claim about pledges, rules or prices.

Supplier pages were read to a fixed crawl depth (home page and eco or product pages, up to 30 pages); an offer outside those pages is not counted.

Commercial-interest disclosure

Commissioned by Stand Central, a retailer of exhibition displays that sells an eco-friendly display range. Stand Central is excluded from every frame, observation and comparison. Supplier and show names are reported as documented facts, not endorsements or rankings.

Reproduction and evidence

The observation CSV holds 133 public records; the source register lists the 112 captures cited by this package with minimal quotations, locators, publishers, exact URLs, capture times and capture hashes. Raw page captures and internal paths are private. Claim IDs F1 to F4 link each finding to its observation IDs and formula.
