Will Your Exhibition Display Meet the Venue’s Fire Safety Rules?

SOURCES CAPTURED: 29 September 2026

We read 1,034 product pages from 39 UK display suppliers, the exhibitor rules of 15 UK venues, 20 organiser exhibitor manuals and the AEV eGuide (August 2026 edition).

1. Four in five product pages say nothing about fire
824 of 1,034 product pages (79.7%) from 39 UK display suppliers make no product-specific fire statement. Only 144 (13.9%) name a fire test standard.
The product page usually leaves a follow-up question for the buyer. We recommend asking the supplier for the named fire test and certificate covering the exact item before ordering, then comparing that evidence with the event’s materials rules.

2. The dominant supplier label is absent from the eGuide
Of 144 product pages that name a fire standard, 119 (82.6%) cite DIN 4102 or a bare B1 label; shorthand is not a complete test designation. Only 4 cite BS 476-7, the test the AEV eGuide names for stand materials.
The full August 2026 eGuide mentions BS 476 on 4 lines and mentions DIN 4102, B1, EN 13501 and BS 5867 on 0, 0, 0 and 0 lines. Only one rule set in the study names DIN 4102 B1: the Floating Offshore Wind 2026 manual, and only for carpets and other floor coverings (“DIN 4102 - B1 and/or EN 13501-1 class C”).

3. Table covers carry fire claims that backwalls lack
65.7% of table-cover pages state fire performance (44 of 67), against 20.4% of fabric backwalls (22 of 108) and 6.9% of counters and plinths (7 of 101).
Fire statements are common on table-cover pages but much rarer on fabric backwalls and counters. We recommend keeping a separate evidence entry for each item, with its supplier, named test and certificate, even when the graphics form one coordinated stand. Shares use pages whose own title confirms the item type.

4. The eGuide asks for certificates few pages offer
The eGuide says “Test certificates must be available for inspection for any materials intended to be used”. Only 10 of 1,034 product pages (1.0%), from 3 suppliers, offer a fire certificate to download or on request.
11 of 15 venues point exhibitors to the eGuide (in their rules or by hosting a copy), but only 1 venue (P&J Live) and 3 of 20 organiser manuals restate the certificate rule in their own text.

CONTEXT
- Venues delegate the materials rule: 11 of 15 venues point exhibitors to the eGuide (in their rules or by hosting a copy), 3 name a fire standard for stand materials in their own documents (The Brighton Centre, Excel London, P&J Live) and 1 (P&J Live) reproduces the eGuide’s materials clauses word for word (10 of 11).
- Materials rules are stable across eGuide editions: All 11 key materials clauses read the same in the December 2024, March 2026 and August 2026 editions that venues host or link. NEC’s rules link an August 2023 edition, and the UKSG 2026 manual (SEC Glasgow) cites the August 2016 and July 2014 editions for electrical rules.
- One height everyone agrees on: Every rule set that states a complex-structure trigger uses 4 m (11 of 11, including the eGuide), while 7 rule sets also set a separate maximum build or wall height from 2.5 m to 6 m.
- Polyester on aluminium dominates: Aluminium is named on 78.1% of pages that name a frame material (425 of 544); polyester fabric on 80.1% of pages naming a graphic material (565 of 705). Roller banners are the exception: PVC 28 against polyester 36 of 68 pages.
- Statements depend on the page you land on: Of 36 suppliers with two or more indoor fabric or PVC products sampled, 22 state fire performance on some and not others, 14 on none and 0 on all.

QUALIFICATIONS
- A product page with no fire statement does not mean the product fails a fire test; the buyer cannot tell from the page.
- The study does not assess compliance or the equivalence of fire standards. Venues and organisers decide what they accept.
- The organiser manuals are a context sample, analysed separately from venues.
- Capture-time evidence (29 September 2026); pages and documents may change.
