Why Exhibition Artwork Prices Are Harder to Compare Than They Look

Methodology and limitations | Stand Central documentary research

Research question and status

What can a UK trade-show exhibitor infer from publicly advertised artwork charges? This is a capture-time documentary study, not commissioned design work, a quality test or a current-price guarantee.

Source captures in this package date from 2026-09-29T09:54:02Z to 2026-09-29T15:53:06Z. The timestamped study plan began at 2026-09-29T09:51:01Z; every later change to the method was logged with its date and time. Changes made after the independent audit are post-analysis corrections, not preregistration.

Population, units and selection

The retained data contain 117 observations and 90 used source captures. These counts include repeated captures, product context, service terms, wage inputs and rate guides; neither is a denominator for market prevalence. There are 19 specialist supplier groups and 9 online-printer groups with evidenced design services, plus separately recorded useful preflight context.

Discovery was purposive: UK-facing display/design pages, public marketplace searches and published agency/rate material. Supplier discovery used live searches and earlier equipment research only as leads. No sales enquiries, purchases, surveys or delivered-work tests were undertaken. Stand Central was excluded before collection.

Unit A targeted artwork for a nominal 3m straight single-sided fabric backwall. The retained entry-charge examples are broader within-supplier illustrations: heights, printed sides and service briefs differ. The multi-panel Unit B sample cannot support a comparable price conclusion. Agency bundles, secondary guides, day rates and professional time estimates stay separate context.

Inclusion, unknowns and original values

An entity with no usable evidence is excluded from the public sample; entities without usable evidence are not tallied as missing data. An explicit invitation to quote is usable evidence, but a design offer without a verified price is not proof of quotation-only pricing or no published price. Preflight is not creative design.

Blank cells represent canonical null or absent fields, never zero. Explicit zero and false remain numeric zero and boolean false. Source-file mention, source-file inclusion and print-ready delivery are distinct. Original currencies and prices sit beside verified ex-VAT values; unknown VAT is not converted to ex VAT.

Analyses supporting the four findings

Entry-charge share: fee excluding VAT divided by that supplier's configured nominal-3m product price excluding VAT, on 5 pairs. Median and range are computed before rounding. Package estimates and starting prices keep their qualifiers. No matched hardware, full-service, delivered-price or cheapest-supplier ranking is implied.

Scope comparison: the named Discount Displays packages retain their published text/logo/image scope and estimate status. Included-service rows retain purchase and scope conditions. Price differences do not establish design quality.

Marketplace tiers: median Starter and median Advanced prices on the same 13 three-tier Upwork listing IDs. Ratio = Advanced median / Starter median, not the median of individual ratios. Tiers buy different work; some Starter tiers exclude Graphic Design. This is not an inevitable upsell or observed customer spending. Broad large-format listings are not verified against one identical 3m template.

Employee model: ONS full-time marketing associate professionals (SOC 3554), hourly median £16.99 and annual median £33,412.00. These are separate population medians. Model annual employer NIC £4,261.80 and pension £815.16; loaded hourly = hourly median × (annual median + NIC + pension) / annual median = £19.57 rounded. Scenario totals multiply the unrounded loaded hourly by the labelled assumed hours, then round to pennies.

Employer NIC = max(annual wage − £5,000.00, 0) × 15%. Minimum employer pension = max(min(annual wage, £50,270.00) − £6,240.00, 0) × 3%. These are model inputs from the captured official sources, not individual payroll advice.

Illustrative full-time employee, ordinary employer NIC category A, no Employment Allowance or relief, minimum qualifying-earnings pension. Separate occupation medians are not the same worker. Excludes software/overheads; not a marginal cash saving or conservative bound.

Time scenarios are assumptions, not observed project durations. The model measures illustrative allocated employee cost, not an extra payroll bill, an avoidable cash saving, a bound or evidence that outsourcing is cheaper. Software and overheads are excluded. No reprint probability or paid-design prevention effect is measured.

Independent verification and corrections

Original source context, selected product variants, VAT evidence, marketplace body scope and semantic tier inclusion were independently audited. Fresh access failed for 14 retained Upwork listings; those rows keep their original capture-time evidence. They are not labelled fresh confirmations. No challenge was bypassed.

Post-analysis corrections withdrew no-price prevalence, task/day cheapness ratios, route-wide project rankings and reprint-risk/savings claims. They corrected product/VAT matching, included-service conditions, marketplace seller deduplication and classification, package-estimate language and consistent full-time wage inputs.

Limitations

Purposive sample, not representative prevalence. Documented artwork services and useful preflight evidence are retained, absence-only sources are not published.

Marketplace tiers are not verified against one identical print-ready 3m template. Source-file inclusion is not the same as print-readiness; a mention is not inclusion.

Upwork independent fresh HTTP/browser attempts encountered a challenge. Retained observations are supported by original same-day captures, not falsely labelled fresh confirmations.

Buyer fees/taxes and charged FX were not established; marketplace figures are not checkout totals.

Day rates are broader role-level context. No conversion from a generic employee workweek to a billable freelance day.

Agency/studio sample is small and heterogeneous. First-party offers, bundles and secondary guides are separately labelled, not a central estimate.

DIY hours, payroll assumptions and any replacement need are hypothetical. Employment Allowance, reliefs, pensions and incremental costs vary.

Replacement prices exclude delivery/rush fees/redesign; no failure probability or prevention effect is measured.

Unit B multi-panel kit lacks a comparable price sample; no claim that nobody offers it.

Some displayed rates conflict with body copy or remain VAT-unknown. Original captures and changed price history are retained.

The retained Roller Banners UK / Eazy Print grouping is circumstantial (shared phone and tiers), not verified common ownership. Sample sizes describe supplier groups; no market prevalence or confirmed-hourly finding depends on this merge.

Commercial-interest disclosure

Commissioned by Stand Central, a retailer of exhibition displays. Stand Central is excluded from the observations and comparisons. Findings describe documented offers, not endorsements or product/service quality.

Reproduction and evidence

The accompanying observation CSV preserves the public canonical fields; the source register provides minimal quotations, locators, publishers, exact URLs and capture timestamps. Full raw page captures are not distributed. Claim IDs and observation IDs link each finding to its inputs.

Recompute entry-charge ratios from the named fee/product rows; compute paired medians from tier values; recompute the employee model from the cited wage, NIC and pension observations. Never multiply the rounded hourly display value when reproducing scenario pennies.
